A new point-of-view:Last year after I ran the Lincoln Marathon, I said a half marathon at a mere 13.1 miles wasn't worth getting out of bed for. I was wrong. Wrong enough in fact, that I'm looking forward to running the 2012 half marathon. The Freedom Run is a part of the Brownville Freedom Day Celebration that includes a parade, an Apple Corp Barbershop concert, a youth tractor pull contest, South East Community Band concert, lunch, bar-b-que and an evening concert featuring Enigma, a duo from Southeastern Nebraska. The Fourth ended with a fireworks display. This all takes place in a community that isn't afraid to pray before the events and say the Pledge of Allegiance. The following photographs of people celebrating the Fourth of July in a small Missouri River town shows why I think Nebraska is such a special place to call home. If you are in the area next year, come and join us. The wet part of town:There's a good chance you heard of the 2011 Missouri River flooding. If not, the first photographs will show a few of the problems Brownville, and many towns along the river, are having this year. The first photograph shows where I think the race should have been. We didn't have webbed feet but that was no problem; they just rerouted the race and made us climb a hill out of town and run up and down hills for a little over six miles that most people never knew Nebraska had. After that we turned around and ran back over the same hills again. Luckily the day started out cloudy and not too hot. The miles passed quickly and we still had enough energy left to enjoy the rest of the day. |
