They were different, Isaac was reflective, sensitive to nature, unconcerned about schedules or money; Abe was hard-working, steady, practical. Isaac's soul longed for the wilderness; Abe's heart ached for a farm. Isaac had stars in his eyes; Abe had dirt under his fingernails. Still the boys were best friends. The year was 1848 and families with covered wagons headed west to Oregon. Isaac and Abe were determined to do the same, though it meant running away from the orphanage and facing the dangers of the trail on their own. Their six-month adventure began as a trek over the road to Oregon, but with the help of the Herzog family it became a journey into their own hearts. Lyndia

Kevin Boos thoroughly researches every aspect of his topic and is scrupulous about historical accuracy. The depiction of the boys' experience on the steamboat is quite realistic. His attention to detail is impressive and yet he still tells an exciting story that readers are sure to remember. This book helps make learning history fun.
